Many great memories of Charlie in football and track and some funny times in class!!  May God give peace to the family at this time.

I’m sad to report that Charles Sutherland died on June 9, 2022 in Corpus Christi, TX. We lived in the same street (Simms Ave SE) and survived many escapades although I’m not sure how we managed. One of the stars of the ‘64 Hornet football team and at Ft Lewis College in Durango, Charlie was a good guy that I lost touch with to my regret. Rest In peace brother!

So sorry to hear this.  My sincere sympathy for his family.  He was my grade school sweetheart.  So glad I got to visit with him at our last reunion.

I'm very sorry to hear of Charlie's passing.  I knew him from middle school if not before.  He was a jock and a gentleman both.

Charlie & I got to know each other well at the 50th Reunion.

A few of us got together with Coaches Gentry & Gibbs for breakfast and afterwards Charlie gave me a ride back to my motel. Along the way we found we had a lot in common…politics, military and of course 3 years of running track together and 2 playing football together.

When I think of him I am reminded that at the end of our journey here if we were asked “How was it”? His and my reply would be in a worn out voice “Man, what a ride!”

So Long

I met Charlie when I came to Wilson in the 8th Grade.  Although not close he would acknowledge me with that infectious smile.  I was glad Larry posted the picture of the meeting with the coaches because Charlie still had the smile.  Charlie helped cement his Hornet teammates so they became a cohesive winning force.  Deepest Sympathy to his sons, family, and Corpus friends.  Please know that the Hornets mourn with them but at the same time rejoice for having known Charlie.

I knew Charles at Woodrow Wilson. We were good friends but I moved away after the 9th grade. John Kimball, Larry Berryman, Terry Stone and I were pretty close back then. Sorry for your loss.

I moved into a house two houses away from Charlie's family the summer before 7th grade. My brother Keith, his brother Keith (Skeeter), Charlie and I spent a lot of time together that summer and afterward. Many good memories of those times! I am so sorry to hear of his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Charles Ernest Sutherland, a native Texan and long time Corpus Christi resident, passed away on June 9, 2022, at the age of 76. The son of Ernest Sutherland and Ollie Mae Sutherland (née Ard), he was born on September 25, 1945 in Archer City, TX. He lived his early life in North Texas, but at a young age moved to Albuquerque, NM, where he attended high school at Highland High School, graduating in 1964. In high school, he was a State Champion wrestler and a running back for the New Mexico State Champion football team in 1964. He attended Fort Lewis College for a short time before serving with the Navy in Vietnam in 1965, one of the first US sailors in Da Nang. After the war, he served onboard USS Everglades, leaving the service in 1966. Following the war, Charles built a career as a mud engineer in the oil industry in Texas, retiring as a Field Supervisor with Baker Hughes in 2010. Throughout his career, he worked rigs all over the United States, offshore, and even as far as South America and the Far East. His skill, meticulous attention to detail, and fierce work ethic earned him a reputation across the oil industry. Charles’s passion was motorcycles, spending his time enjoying riding with his friends in the Tradesmen Motorcycle Club. Even in his later years as riding became difficult, he converted his beloved Harley Davidson motorcycle into a trike, letting him stay on the open road even longer. Family was also intensely important to Charles, sacrificing a great deal to raise his two younger children as a single father after the death of his wife. Charles is survived by three sons, Charles Eric Sutherland, Sean Sutherland, and Paul Sutherland, four grandchildren, Kiefer, Sydney, Alex, and Forrest, and four great-grand children, IzaBella, Felisita, Mosese, and Meleane. He is also survived by his sister, Sharon Byington, and brother, Larry Berryman. He was preceded in death by his brother Keith “Skeeter” Sutherland. A celebration of life was held on June 18. In lieu of flowers, it is asked that anyone wishing to memorialize Charles consider a donation to the Disabled American Veterans in his honor.
